Fortune Best Place to Work For

Proponents of government-mandated project labor agreements (PLAs) and their pals in government often erroneously claim PLAs are needed to prevent “low-road” nonunion contractors who cut corners and exploit their workforce from performing taxpayer-funded construction projects.

However, they fail to acknowledge that PLAs discourage competition from the best merit shop contractors and their skilled employees like ABC member firms on this list. Unfortunately, quality firms and talented employees that deliver to taxpayers the best product the best price are hurt by PLA requirements. In addition, taxpayers pay more and get less because of PLA requirements.

It is a shame baseless fear tactics are used by unions and PLA proponents to justify the erosion of free enterprise via anti-competitive, costly and discriminatory union-favoring government-mandated PLAs.

DPR Construction, listed at number 10, moved up five spots from the 2013 list and is listed for its impressive client list, open-office floor plan, two net-zero-energy office buildings, business cards with no titles, and its stock program offered to employees.

2014 ABC Member Contractors listed by rank:

#10: DPR Construction
#59: PCL Construction Enterprises
#82: TDIndustries
#99: Kiewit Corporation

Fortune picks the “100 Best Companies to Work For” based on a survey conducted with the Great Place to Work Institute that is sent to a random sample of employees from each company and measures job satisfaction, camaraderie and management’s credibility to account for two-thirds of the company’s score. The remaining one-third of the score is based on the company’s pay and benefit programs, hiring practices, methods of internal communication, training, recognition programs and diversity efforts. The list outlined information for each company including annual revenue, number of employees in the United States, job growth, diversity, training and a description on what makes working for the company so great.
