Maine Governor Signs Open Competition Bill into Law

Maine is the land of good lobster, fine mustard and now open competition for taxpayer funded construction!

Maine Governor Paul LePage (R) has signed L.D. 1257, which will keep government-mandated project labor agreements (PLAs) off state construction through October 2015.

In Maine, more than 9 out of ten construction workers choose not to join a union.  By banning government-mandated PLAs on state projects, the state’s elected leaders are sending the message that all qualified workers should have the opportunity to compete for projects funded by their own tax dollars and not just those with a union card.

The trend is growing.  Taxpayers in state after state are standing up and saying NO to these wasteful handouts to Big Labor bosses at the expense of the vast majority of the construction workforce that chooses not to join a labor union.  Maine is the sixth state to ban government-mandated PLAs to some degree this year.
