The public outcry over wasteful and discriminatory project labor agreements (PLAs) in Indiana is picking up steam. The Indianapolis Star published an outstanding letter to the editor from a Zionsville resident in today’s paper.
Project labor agreements: Quality isn’t real issue
In regard to Ted Evanoff’s article Jan. 24, “An ailing process,” I believe the point of the project labor agreement debate is being overlooked. This issue is not about union quality vs. nonunion quality or union cost vs. nonunion cost. The real concern surrounds a form of legal discrimination, which is exactly what occurs every time a PLA is implemented. Some people choose to be in a union; many do not. The nonunion people are prohibited from reaping the benefits of their own paid taxes.
There are numerous other ways to ensure that experienced and qualified contractors bid and build structures without resorting to project labor agreements, yet this is the reasoning many use.
